‘We Feel Invisible a Lot of the Time’: Insights Into the Roles of Alcohol and Other Drug Lived and Living Experience Workers

The employment of alcohol and other drug lived and living experience (LLE) workers has increased. Although there is a growing literature on challenges faced by LLE workers, there remains a gap in understanding the unique challenges and facilitators of frontline workers in diverse settings. Additionally, it is unclear what unique barriers are faced by living experience workers.

Perinatal Health Promotion in Indigenous Maternal Health: A Scoping Review of Peer-Reviewed Evidence and Australian Community-Controlled Programs

Indigenous women experience a disproportionate burden of adverse perinatal health outcomes, yet the extent and nature of health promotion interventions addressing modifiable behavioural and social determinants remain poorly synthesised. This scoping review mapped smoking, nutrition, alcohol, physical exercise, and social and emotional wellbeing (SNAPS(o))-related perinatal health promotion programs delivered through Australian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), supplemented by relevant peer-reviewed evidence identified across Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, Canada, and the United States.

Adapting ‘The Grog App’ to Ask Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples About Their Drinking in Primary Healthcare: A Delphi Study

Alcohol screening in primary healthcare services, including Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, may encounter barriers. These include time constraints, competing health priorities and sensitivities about the topic. Digital tools like the Grog App, validated in population settings, offer potential opportunities to overcome these barriers.

Closing the gap in reproductive health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women: lessons learned from longitudinal perinatal cohort studies

Longitudinal, Indigenous-led research integrated with community-controlled continuity of care can improve and support perinatal outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in Australia. Across the past 35 years, seven cohorts have contributed complementary insights from pregnancy through early childhood with varying geographic reach and appropriate Indigenous governance. This paper discusses each of these cohorts and how these studies across pregnancy, birth and some continuing through early childhood, have substantially added to the body of knowledge related to perinatal health needs for women.

From teratogens to trajectories: Integrating teratology and Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) frameworks for a new take on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD)

This article explains how research on prenatal alcohol exposure has evolved from two separate frameworks, teratology and Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD), into a more integrated approach. It highlights how combining these perspectives improves understanding of how prenatal alcohol exposure affects lifelong health and development, and supports better prevention and intervention strategies for FASD.
