FASD Research Australia NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is an Australian-led, international collaboration in FASD research and translation, bringing together experts across epidemiology, implementation science, health economics, Indigenous research, policy development and paediatrics.

It fills knowledge gaps about the epidemiology, burden and costs of FASD and conducts high-impact studies that translate directly into better outcomes for individuals and families with FASD.

FASD Research Australia envisions a world without FASD, starting with Australia. We aim to:

  • Generate state-of-the-art evidence to implement culturally safe, ethical, equitable, and cost-effective policies, processes and practices for more effective diagnosis, management and prevention of FASD.
  • Harness the lived experience of patients, consumers, carers, Indigenous communities, researchers, policy makers and service providers in all stages of research translation.
  • Build capacity and capabilities in research and its translation across policy and practice for Australia’s future health research workforce.
  • Consolidate, extend and support collaborative FASD research endeavours within and beyond Australia.

FASD Research Australia includes three streams of research:

Stream 1 :

Epidemiology, Burden and Costs

Clarifying the scale, nature and impacts of the FASD crisis in Australia.

Stream 2 :

Diagnosis and Management

Developing effective ways to identify and support people affected by FASD.

Stream 3 :

Prevention through education, policy and practice

Laying the foundations for a FASD-free future
