The FASD Hub Australia and the National Organisation for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Australia (NOFASD) are pleased to announce April Wilson as the recipient of the 2026 Heather Jones Community Award for Contribution to Awareness and Understanding of FASD.
The Heather Jones Community Award recognises unsung champions, advocates and mentors who have made a significant and lasting contribution to supporting people living with FASD, their families and communities.
Named after the late Heather Jones, the award honours her legacy of leadership, dedication to positive change, and commitment to raising awareness and understanding of FASD.
The selection panel unanimously agreed that April is a highly deserving recipient of this year’s award, recognising more than three decades of dedicated advocacy and leadership.
A proud Aboriginal woman with strong connections to the Kaurna, Raukkan, Ngarrindjeri and Narungga peoples, April has devoted her time and expertise to raising awareness of FASD, particularly within Aboriginal communities and supporting people living with FASD and their families. Her contributions as a volunteer trainer, advocate and Board Director for NOFASD have helped strengthen understanding of FASD across Australia.
Inspired by her own lived experience, April began advocating for greater awareness and support while seeking understanding and assessment for the children in her care.
Since then, she has shared her knowledge and experiences at conferences, forums and training sessions, helping families, educators, health professionals and community organisations better understand FASD and its lifelong impacts.
April’s perspectives have helped shape programs and services that support individuals and families across Australia.
April’s courage and empathy have left a lasting mark on the FASD community.
