A message from the FASD Hub Chair, Professor Elizabeth Elliott:

I am writing with profound sadness to let you know that Dr Tracey Tsang, Senior Research Fellow for the Discipline of Child and Adolescent Health, and Manager for the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Australian Registry (FASDAR), died suddenly and unexpectedly on Wednesday 9 April 2025.

Tracey was a great friend, and I had the privilege of having her as a colleague at the University of Sydney for over 10 years.

Above all, however, she was a dedicated Mum to her boys Jared and Dylan and a supportive wife to Tim Stegeman through many years of medical and anaesthetic study. She was a brilliant musician – performing on the violin at a professional level – and a black belt in martial arts.

A series of photos of Tracey Stegeman and her family.

Tracey loved her work and was an excellent and productive scientist. After completing her PhD on ADHD, Tracey went on to work across many FASD projects including the Lililwan and Bigiswun Kid projects, the Hunter New England trial, the Australian Paediatric Surveillance Unit, revision of the Australian Guide to the Diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), the FASD Hub Australia, several systematic reviews, work on FASD prevalence and the impact of prenatal cannabis, the genetics of FASD, and most recently as the lead in the FASD Australian Registry.

She was an excellent MD supervisor, and her students all loved her.

I will miss her smile, her friendship, her enthusiasm, her expertise and her dedication to her work.

The details of Tracey’s memorial service are below:
