Following a referral from the Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon Mark Butler MP, on 22 August 2024 the House Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Sport commenced an inquiry into the health impacts of alcohol and other drugs in Australia.
The Committee urged health professionals, service providers, peak bodies, Government departments at the Commonwealth, state, and territory levels, researchers, and the public to participate in the inquiry. The Committee aimed to gain insights into the current challenges in alcohol and drug treatment, exploring best practice models from both Australia and abroad.
The FASD Hub Australia included a submission which focused on demonstrating the role of the Hub in addressing alcohol harms in pregnancy and FASD in Australia. The submission outlined the purpose of the Hub, which is to provide evidence-based information and resources to enable health professionals to recognise and manage alcohol use in pregnancy and FASD; inform service development and prevention policy; showcase Australian research; and facilitate access to FASD-informed services.
